SUNBLOCK - Many years ago, the FDA established our current SPF rating to protect our skin against UVB rays which are more prevalent in summer. It has become evident that UVA rays (which are with us all year) penetrate deeper into the dermal layer of the skin and are responsible for the visual signs of premature aging. The FDA has made the following labeling regulations mandatory by 2001: The term "Sunblock" will no longer be allowed: you will see the words "Physical", "Organic", and "Full or Broad Spectrum" on products: "Water-Proof" will be replaced by the words "water/perspiration resistant", and this will apply only if the product retains its original SPF value after 40 minutes of water immersion. Damaging rays bombard us through our car windshields and even just walking to the mail box. Always protect your skin by using Full Spectrum (Organic or Physical) sun protection.

a tropical cream, or Accutane, an oral medication, are both very effective prescription treatments for acne. Either of these are available through your dermatologist. These drugs are very powerful and have substantial side effects including extreme photosensitivity. They are to be used with caution.

ON A WELLNESS PLAN? ...
Make regular, professional skin care services a part of this journey and your new image.

OUR BODIES ...
are almost 2/3 water. Replenish it by drinking AT LEAST 4, 8 oz. glasses of water everyday. Coffee, tea, cola, soups do not count. It must be water!

ACNE ...
is a disorder of the sebaceous oil) glands. It is NOT caused by eating chocolate, fried/fatty foods, or drinking carbonated beverages. Acne effects 85% of people aged 12-24 - acne in this age group is more severe in males than females. In people aged 25-34, acne drops to 8% and between ages 25-44 the disorder drops to 3%. In these age groups, women have a higher occurrence of acne.

SPECIAL NOTE ...
There is a variety of scientific evidence to indicate that antioxidants (Vitamins A, B-5, C, E, K) in skin care products have anti-aging effects. However, the benefits of these products come from continuous, long-term use and many are preventative rather than restorative.

OUR BODIES AND BONES ...
always need MODERATE amounts of sunlight, (for Vitamin D synthesis) especially during the winter months when days are shorter and natural sunlight is less. If you are using a tanning bed for times when natural sunlight is low, make certain the beds (and salon goggles) are sanitized after each use and that the strength of the lights in the bed and time of exposure correspond.

THE ANTIBIOTIC, TETRACYCLINE, ...
has been found to impair the absorption of dairy products. It is generally recommended to consume these foods at a different time of day than when this medication is taken. Additionally, antibiotics can make your skin very, very, sensitive to the sun and cause painful sunburn when, otherwise, you might normally tan.

PRACTICE SAFE SUN ...
Consistently using sunblock is the number 1 preventer of premature aging. Many moisturizers and foundations now contain sunscreen and sunblock. Only products with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide offer full sun protection from UVA, UVB and Infra-red rays. Learn to interpret ingredient labels.

REFRESH ...
Alternating warm and cold water applications while showering will help stimulate blood flow and aid the skin cells with enhanced micro circulation, resulting in healthier and firmer skin.

THE NUMBER ONE...
cause of cosmetic sensitivity is fragrance. It does not matter if it is natural or synthetic. The Number Two cause of cosmetic sensitivity is preservatives. They are necessary but may release tiny amounts of formaldehyde which can be irritating to some. Ingredients with "parabens" (methyl, propyl, ethyl, etc) tend to be less reactive.

YOUR PERSONAL EYE...
make-up products are notorious for harboring bacteria; replace unused eye make-up products every 3 to 6 months.

Self-Tanners ...

If you'd like a healthy bronzed look to your skin, self-tanners are a safe alternative to the potentially damaging UV rays of the sun.

FAUX BRONZED
Our hectic schedules rarely allow us time to consistently "work on" a tan. Tanning beds may produce long term skin damage and skin fungus. The average cost of one tanning session in a tanning bed runs $5-7 and monthly tanning packages run $35-50 ... then there is the travel time to and from the salon, making an appointment or taking the chance that a bed will be available.

Self tanning is the fastest, safest and most economical way to tan. It can be done at home at your convenience without any harmful effects.

For the best self-tanning results, before bedtime, shower and use a body scrub or loofa on the areas to be tanned. Towel dry completely then apply product with latex or vinyl gloves. A quality product provides you with an exfoliator, tanner, moisturizer and gloves. After application, wait about 30 minutes then go to bed for the night. Self tanners work best when the body is at rest and the skin is dry. In the morning, shower if you wish and apply a body moisturizer. To establish your base tan, repeat the process for two more consecutive nights omitting the scrub, but not the shower! To maintain the tan, (at bedtime) once a week use the scrub in the shower then reapply the self-tanner two times a week.

Note ...
Self-Tanners provide very little, if any, sun protection. Always, always, remember to apply a "full-spectrum" sunblock. Consistently using sunblock is the #1 preventor of premature aging.
